Re: Inflammatory Airway Disease

Greetings Michele,

I'm sorry to hear that Hattrick is suffering from IAD. Steroids are typically used, but I do not like them for long term use because they depress immune function making him more likely to develop a secondary infection.

Your goal in treating him nutritionally should be to regulate immune function. I'm not clear why you discontinued Reitsport, but an even more appropriate supplement for his situation would be Su-Per Anti-Oxidant (recently written up by the Horse Journal). This comprehensive formula is excellent in removing inflammation caused by free radicals (as a result of his respiratory condition). I would also give him Nutra Flax, because omega 3 fatty acids are key when it comes to stabilizing the immune system.

Keep me posted!

All the best,

Hi Dr. Getty,

My horse Hattrick is 8 yrs old and has been diagnosed with IAD - we are treating him with steroids and waiting for his bal tests to determine how to treat him long term. He is a dressage horse FEI level and can't be shown with drugs. However he is signed up for the entire show season. Do you have any recommendations on supplements to help his respitory system. Currently we give him wet hay, no supplements (he was on Reitsport) and grain/hay stretcher 3 times a day.

Thanks you,
Michele

PS i have phone consulted with you in the past with all my horses.
