Hi Vicky,

1 cup of beet pulp only amounts to 1/8th of a pound, so it is very, very little. I know it looks like a lot when it soaks up water, but you can give far more than this. Depending on how much Triple Crown Senior he gets, build his meal size up to 4 lbs. Two quarts of beet pulp equals 1 lb.

You can also add some alfalfa -- hay or pellets. The pellets soak up nicely with the been pulp.

You can also increase Ration Plus to 1-2 tablespoons per day.

Hi Dr. Getty - We've decided to put Whiskey on Beet Pulp as he looks like he has lost a little weight and with our harsh winters don't want him to continue to loose. Just don't know how much to start with. I got the pellet form and soaked 1 c. last nite in hot water and after it swelled up it was quite a bit with his regular feed added so for this am I did 1/2 c. Will 1/2 cup am and pm do ok for him. He's on Triple Crown senior, Glazen complete, and ration plus and hay 24/7, just had his teeth floated 2 weeks ago and is on a regular deworming program. Oh and he is 28, thanks so much - Vicky

OK that's good to know, I will definately show this to Barry, he's terrified he will colic or something. He is prob getting that much Ration Plus so were good there, he's stil very perky just don't want him loosing any more weight with winter coming on. I even thought about giving him a warm beet pulp meal at noon this winter also just to help him out. So your saying soaking a couple qts of beet pulp will not be to much on his stomach? Thanks so much

Forgot he get's 1 1/2 lbs of his Triple Crown Senior per meal and we just soak it with the beet pulp

Hi Vicky,

Two quarts is just fine -- That's only one pound and added to the Triple Crown Senior, and you have a fine meal.

Let me caution you about the bran mash. The key is to be consistent in your feeding. I have seen too many cases of colic result from feeding a bran mash once every few days because the bacterial population in the hind gut have not had a chance to adjust. So if you are going to feed bran, do it every day.

Having said that, if you give bran, be sure to get a commercial product, such as ADM Alliance Natural Glo rice bran, that is both stabilized against rancidity, and has added calcium to correct the very high levels of phosphorus that naturally exist in bran.

Thank you for your response Dr. Getty - but one thing, we don't have Whiskey or any of our others on any Bran. So far Whiskey is holding his weight with this meal were doing and really loves it. Thanks so much.

Hi Vicky -- ooops! When I saw the word, "warm," I connected it with bran. But I see you said "warm beet pulp" -- that's absolutely fine.
