Thank you so much for all of you helpful information concerning IR horses. My 12yr old Arabian gelding is borderline IR. He does not seem like the typical IR horse as he is a hard keeper but has the cresty neck and other fat deposits and tends to have a "ribby" look about him. He is on Purina Welsolve L/S, grass hay, soaked alfalfa cubes and I have recently added Quiessence and Nutra Flax to his diet as well. He is at home now but will be going to my trainer's barn soon for show season. I would like to put his Quiessence and Nutra Flax in individual ziplock baggies for his AM & PM feedings for the convience of the grooms that will be doing the feeding. My question is will it affect the quality of the supplements to mix them together in the same baggie? I will be at the barn often and could provide a new supply of supplements weekly. Thank you again for all of your helpful information on your website and your book. I think we are finally on the right track now.

One option you might consider is using SmartPaks. They have the Omega Horseshine (flax seed) and Quiessence that you can get in individual serving packs.

I'm glad you're feeding both Nutra Flax and Quiessence for your IR horse. Insulin resistant horses have "regional" fat deposits that form in specific places (e.g., crest of neck, shoulders, tail rump, spine, sheath, even over the eyes) and the rest of the body could be of normal weight and even of poor condition.

Regarding your question... you can mix Nutra Flax with Quiessence. You are wise to ask because in some cases, it is best to keep supplements separate to avoid oxidation. But in this case, it is fine. Keep the Nutra Flax in a cool, dry place.

Lisa -- you brought up Omega Horseshine. I do not generally recommend this product simply because it has added oats, which are definitely out for an insulin resistant horse. Nutra Flax, on the other hand, is just ground flaxseeds, done in a way to prevent accelerated oxidation, with a small amount of calcium added to correct for the naturally high levels of phosphorus found in flax.
