Older Mare Joint supplement question?

I am giving my 17 yr old mare the Glazen complete as of 2 weeks ago. Now I see I should have maybe gone with Glazen GL for joint support. Until I use up my "complete" should I supplement some (6,000 mg of Glucosamine)? She does not show any problems with her movement or joints yet but I just want to be sure since she is an older horse.

Thanks, Judy

Re: Older Mare Joint supplement question?

Hi Judy,

Actually, 17 is not all that old and she may not need a joint supplement. Certainly if she is not showing any arthritic symptoms, I would stick with the Glanzen Complete. The omega 3 fatty acids (from flax) go a long way toward lessening any inflammation. And the extra vitamin C is also important. In fact, for aging horses, I often simply recommend flaxseed meal (for omega 3s) and vitamin C (for collagen production -- the protein found in joints and bones) as a means of keeping the joints healthy. Additional supplementation is likely not necessary in your case.

As she ages, you'll want to add more vitamin C (since she loses her ability to produce this vitamin as she gets older). But for now, the extra vitamin C in Glanzen Complete is sufficient.

All the best,
