Power Plus

I would like to know what you think of the product called Power Plus as you can read more about it at this link http://finleybrand.webs.com/powerplus.htm

A friend of mine just put her halter horse on it and I am thinking after listening to the nutrition call on 7/17 that it may cause inflammation plus will add to much fat when this horse really needs muscle.

Re: Power Plus

Hi Kim,

This product appears to be nothing but soybean oil plus probiotics. And soybean oil is disproportionately high in omega 6 fatty acids, thereby increasing inflammation. I do not recommend it.

Plus, as you mentioned, if the horse needs to build muscle mass, adding extra fat will not do that. It will provide needed calories to do work and beyond work needs, add body fat -- but not muscle.

Re: Power Plus and Grain

Hi Kim,

As a commercially fortified feed, it is sadly lacking in many nutrients and would require an additional vitamin/mineral supplement to round it out. For example, horses need at least 1 IU of vitamin E per pound of body weight. That's 1000 IUs for a 1000 lb horse. This product only contains 30 IUs per pound. Even if you fed 10 lbs of it, the horse would only get 300 IUs. And performance horses (which they depict in their photo) need as much as 5 IUs of
vitamin E per lb of body weight.

It also contains a substantial amount of corn. I never recommend corn for horses -- it is very poorly digested and therefore, easily fermented in the hindgut, increasing the risk of colic and laminitis.

So thumbs down on this one.
