pinworms

Hi Dr. Getty,
My horse has had pinworms. I've done one dose of panacure about 3 months ago, that didn't work. Then about a month ago a single dose of a pelleted wormer. That seemed like it worked because the next day there were alot of worms in her manure. Then a couple days after that I saw the sticky substance around her anus area and the itching was back. I tried another single dose of the pellet wormer (the feed store clerk said that particular wormer was safe to do again so close together), only this time she would not touch it. I wasn't able to get her to eat it. So I called my Dynamite distributor and she suggested the SOD for 10 days. After 10 days she still has them. I've also been putting vasaline on her back end to try to keep the eggs from sticking.
Any suggestions?

Re: pinworms

Hello Lorna,

Thank you for your patience and I hope, by now, you have the pinworm situation under control. The best way to eradicate pinworms is through a regular deworming program using either a daily dewormer of pyrantel pamoate or pasting with ivermectin or moxidectin. It must be a regular program, not an intermittent dosing.

All the best,
