Supplements

Hi Dr. Getty. I purchased Balance IQ from your several times for Blanco who is 24 years old with border line cushings. I also just recently bought Su-per Antioxidant for my 13 year old named Cooper, who has occational respitory problems. Can I give this supplement to Blanco also or are the two supplements interacting? Does this supplement contain enough Vitamin C and DMG or should I purchase these separately? I also looked at Pre Ox, which is better?
Besides the supplements mentioned, they are also getting Nutra Flex. Both are on grass hay only which I rinse. Blanco is 800 lbs and gets a 2 Qt scoop of Triple Crown Senior twice a day and Cooper is 1100 lbs and gets 1/2 scoop of Triple Crown Light as he is a bit overweight. Can you recommend another feed instead?

Re: Supplements

Hi Dorothe,

It seems like the best way I can assist you would be to visit with you personally to go over everything you're feeding, along with a hay analysis (if feasible) for your two horses. This is because I would like to examine the reasons for the respiratory problems and delve into that further, along with discussing Cushing's and the appropriateness of your feeding regimen.

Since you are feeding Nutra Flax (which is excellent), you wouldn't need PreOx (since PreOx is flaxseed meal based). SuPer Antioxidant is excellent and does contain a considerable amount of DMG but it may not be enough for your younger horse. But vitamin C should be higher for a 24 year old horse. And may even be needed for your 13 year old due to respiratory issues. You can give both your horses 1/4 ounce of Pure C, to provide approximately 7,000 mg of vitamin C.

Two quarts of TC Senior, twice daily, is approximately 5 lbs of feed, so we would want to take a closer look at overlaps between the fortified feed and the supplement. In the meantime, I would not feed SuPer Antioxidant at the full dose -- cut it by half.

So, I hope this will get you started. As you can see, there is a lot to consider and before I can recommend a different feed, I would need to examine the big picture.

Happy New Year!

Re: Supplements

Dr. Getty, thank you for your quick reply. I would like to talk to you personally and will contact you within the next few weeks. In the meantime I'll take your advice about the supplements. Cooper was diagnosed with heaves, but has not had an attack since August. I am wetting his hay and have given him additional DMG. I noticed that he is only coughing under stress and since I moved both horses to another barn, he didn't have any more issues. Which DMG would you recommend, the Vita Flex DMG 3000 or Super DMG Ultra? I also would like to give both my horses Quiessence, as Cooper has fatty deposits. I'll have him tested for IR before I'll talk to you and try to have a hay analysis.
Thank you again, I'll look forward to talk to you personally.
I love your book by the way, it has helped me a great deal already.

Re: Supplements

Hello Dorothe,

Thank you for your patience.

The SuPer DMG3000 will work well. It is in a dextrose (sugar) base, but it is minimal.

I'll look forward to speaking with you and we can discuss if Quiessence is beneficial. It is definitely appropriate for insulin resistant horses.

I'm delighted that you are finding my book, Feed Your Horse Like A Horse, to be helpful.

Best regards,
