Re: Question about Glanzen Complete

Hello Billy,

No, you would not need to feed Nutra Flax along with Glanzen Complete, since Glanzen Complete is Nutra Flax, with vitamins and minerals added.

I am interested in your sources of copper and zinc -- would you please send me the links to the products you're using?

Thank you for writing.

Hello,

My horses are on a balanced roughage ( daily: 15 lbs grass hay with 2 lbs alfalfa pellets, beet pulp, Vit. E, copper and zinc added to offset the high iron). I also add 4 oz of Nutra-flax daily. If I decided to add Glanzen Complete will I still need to add the Nutra-flax? Thanks.

Re: Question about Glanzen Complete

Hello Dr Getty,

I use polyzinc and polycopper from

http://www.uckeleequine.com/buy/polycopper1/

I add 310mg of polycopper and 670mg of polyzinc to help ratio because of 1139mg of iron daily, according to hay analysis x the pounds I feed. If my math is correct, that brings to Fe:Cu:Zn ratio from 9.5:1:4.6 (using my analysis copper/zinc numbers) to 3:1:3 with my target, in a perfect world, being 4:1:3. The new ratio betters the odds of the right amount of copper and zinc being absorbed. I know since I've started this my coat on my black mare no longer bleaches out during the summer, which is another indicator that the mare might not have been absorbing enough copper/zinc from her diet.

If I have figured all this wrong, please let me know.

Thanks

Re: Question about Glanzen Complete

Hello Billy,

As long as you're not feeding any other source of minerals -- no supplementation or mineralized salt -- then these calculations are fine.

Since hay has next to no vitamin E, vitamin C, vitamin D, beta carotene, or omega 3 fatty acids, I recommend a vitamin supplement to fill in these gaps. And generally, such supplements also contain minerals. So, this needs to be taken into consideration.
