Alfalfa vs. Timothy

Dr. Getty ~ Another question! Can you please explain the difference in feeding alfalfa vs timothy pellets/cubes. Is the only difference the protein? I was considering changing to timothy so I can use it for everyone in the barn. Is it safe with minis? Thank you... AGAIN!

Re: Alfalfa vs. Timothy

Hi Kellie,

The difference is not only the quantity of protein, but the amino acid profile (building blocks of protein). When fed together, they complement each other and create a high quality protein. This is why I like adding a small amount of alfalfa to a grass hay diet.

I would limit the amount of alfalfa for your minis -- it is higher in calories and minis are genetically predisposed toward gaining weight, which leads to insulin resistance.

All the best,
