Re: Good and Sound by West Feeds

Hello Lynette,

Looks like it is made by West Feeds but I was not able to see any detail on it except it states that it is "lower in starch."

Well, "lower" doesn't necessarily mean "low." Safe Choice, by Nutrena, for example, is lower in starch than say, oats would be. Oats has approximately 50% NSC whereas Safe Choice has approximately 25% NSC. Now, that is definitely much lower than oats, but way too high for an insulin resistant horse who would benefit from a feed that has less than 13% NSC.

So, I expect that this West Feed is similar or may not even be as low as Safe Choice -- you would have to call the company to ask about the %NSC to know for sure.

If you have an insulin resistant horse (one that is overweight and has metabolic syndrome, or is suffering from Cushing's) then choose a truly low NSC feed -- one that contains no cereal grains (oats, corn, barley, wheat, etc.) or molasses.

All the best,

Hi Dr. Getty!
I went to the feed store and was told that this "Good & Sound Low Starch" by West Feeds is the same as SafeChoice. I've tried to look it up but haven't found anything. Have you heard anything about it?
