Blue green algae supplement

Hi Dr. Getty,
I came upon this supplement at a horse expo. today, it sounds very interesting. I was told it can help with improving hoof quality, horses with Cushings, wound recovery, and even replace joint supplements. Can I have your thoughts please?

Re: Blue green algae supplement

Hi Heather,

I like blue-green algae. It is a very nutritious substance and I have had good results with it in treating various immune system issues (such as allergies). Whether it will do all the things you listed is questionable, however.

You could try it for a couple of months without the joint supplement and see how your horse does. But in general, I believe that it is a good addition toward filling in what is not found in an overgrazed pasture, for example.

Bottom line... it can be a beneficial part of the "big picture" but is not a cure-all in itself.

All the best,
