Re: Stevia

Hi Jackie,

I have not come across any studies on stevia and horses. So, I'm not able to give you specific amounts. However, I have used it with horses for a short term usage. Add one package (like you'd use for your coffee) and see if that makes a difference. You can add more but I would not use it indefinitely -- perhaps no more than a month.

You could also try adding a couple of drops of a flavored extract that you'd buy in your grocery store. Horses love banana flavor.

Apple cider vinegar is well received by many horses, as well.

So, let me know what formula you come up with!

All the best,

Hi Dr. Getty,

I've heard that Stevia is well tolerated in horses. I'd like to start adding some of it (raw, powdered and organic) to my horse's supplements to encourage her to eat the powdered supplements and salt.

What would be your recommended daily dosage of Stevia to accomplish this goal (increased palatability)? What would be your recommendation for the highest amount that would be safe to give daily in the long term?

Many thanks!
Jackie
