Hi Geri,
Grain hays tend to be lower in protein and higher in sugar/starch but since it doesn't have seed heads, it likely is lower in starch than if it did. But, I would definitely supplement with alfalfa to boost the protein quality. You can give 30% alfalfa to a healthy horse that is not overweight.

What do you think of feeding my horses wheat grass hay? The farmer states it is wheat that has not headed out. It is very dry here, and grass hay (or any kind, for that matter) is becoming hard to find - and expensive! I have plenty of alfalfa and alfalfa-grass hay to mix with this hay if it is OK to feed.
