Alfalfa Hay

Hello Dr. Getty. Last year you provided a tremendous amount of help to me with regard to my horse's nutrition. Thank you so much for all of your help! You advised me not to give my horse more than 50% Alfalfa and I don't. On the vet's recommendation, I switched her to pellets, which I soak with water. Was your recommendation of only 50% Alfalfa just for hay, or does that also apply to pellets. Right now, I give her a Bermuda/alfalfa mix. Thank you again for your valuable assistance.

Re: Alfalfa Hay

Hi Leisa,

Thank you for your kind words -- it was a pleasure to help.

All sources of alfalfa should be included in the 50% mark. So, if you are feeding alfalfa pellets as a meal, consider switching to beet pulp or a grass hay pellet/cube.

All the best,
