which supplement to use!!

Hi Dr. Getty, I have (another) question regarding the therapeutic horses I am in charge of. There are 5 in the herd. There is a mini, a Pony of America, 2 Appaloosas, and a Haflinger. I want to start providing them additional supplementation. They get hay only (for the most part) all year long. Is is reasonable for me to think I can supplement them all the same - or do I need to make allowances for their breed, size, etc. ??
The mini and POA are looking really good (they have lost weight over the winter), the Haflinger is heavy with a crusty neck (he's a bully around food - but that's b/c he runs out [a discussion for another time]), the 2 appys are fine as well - in terms of weight. The Haflinger (7 yr old gelding) is also a bit nervous, jumping at everything under the sun.

I was thinking Glanzen Complete for everyone, Quiescence for the Haflinger (and mini and POA if they should show signs they need it in the future), as well as additional loose sodium. They will continue to get a good supply of hay (not as much as I would give them, but they are not my horses so I don't have the final say) and some pasture in the summer.

Whadaya think?

Re: which supplement to use!!

Hi Jane,

You are definitely on the right track. Glanzen Complete will fill in all the nutritional gaps that exist with hay, while also providing valuable omega 3 fatty acids (which are also beneficial for insulin resistance). Feed 1 scoop per 400 lbs of body weight.

Quiessence should be fed at a rate of 1 scoop per 250 lbs of body weight until you start to see the crestiness subside. Then you can go to a maintainance dose of 1 scoops per 500 lbs of body weight.

Good job!
