Hi Kish,

A hay substitute is generally fine and you can feed hay cubes free choice, so see if those are available, as well. See if you can get a commercial ration that is designed for growing horses for your colt such as Triple Crown Growth.

Thanks so much for your response. Hopefully; these comments will not only help me but others that are going thru the same struggles with the shortage of hay.

Glad to help, if only to offer some temporary solution to the problem. I know what it's like having to find hay during drought situations, having gone through this while living in Texas.
