I am researching men from Newmarket Ont who died in WWI. Walter Gardner\'s name in on the Newmarket War memorial. He was a sailor on the HMCS Niobe (RCN), depot ship Halifax. On Dec 6 1917 a munitions ship in Halifax harbour exploded and Walter Gardner, O/S was killed. His body was never recovered. The search has lead me to this web site. If there is any information you may have on Walter Gardner you could share it would be appreciated.

Is it possible to buy a copy of the 1953 rose Queen ceremony mentioned on your website? the photo isn't accessible. A friend lives on Holly Bank and has a photograph of herself at the ceremony in what is now her garden. ~I'd like to have a copy framed for her as a companion piece. Many thanks

I attended St Anne's primary. I loved the school. I remember being chosen (in my first year at school) to play the part of the Queen in the Christmas school play. Just before the 'big night' I received a slight demotion - I played the Silver Birch Tree instead!!!! I remember one teacher that I had (Mrs Stoddard). Regards, Brenda

This is a very interesting and informative site. My family (surname Tracey) originates from the Sale/Altrincham area. My dad, Brian Tracey (who was brought up at 15, Sefton Crescent, Sale) will be very interested in having a look at the site when he next comes to visit me. Well done!!

Hugh Archibald James, who was Vicar of St Anne's from 1925 to 1930 was my grandfather. I have the letters written by his referees about his suitability for the position, the handwritten parchment document of his 'letters of institution' to the Church and Benefice by Henry Lake, Bishop of Chester, and a letter from the Bishop written when Hugh James left St Anne's for Hartfield in Sussex. This letter commented that he had proved, 'just the very person that St Anne's needed to preserve its piety and to mitigate its prejudices'. The Bishop also wrote, 'I am so sorry that your child's health has made you anxious. I do wish something could be done for the climate of your neighbourhood. You are the second good man (I am thinking of Sturt) who has had to be anxious about his children.'

We were delighted to find the information on the St Anne's website, and can supply a photo of him.

I was born in Sale Cottage Hospital, overlooking Sale Park (Worthington Park), on 21st May 1958, and spent the first 23 years of my life at "Brookfield", 22 Hope Road, Sale, the road which runs alongside the railway and the Bridgewater Canal from Sale station to Brooklands station. When I was a child I always thought that our house was named after an ancient brook or something, but it was actually named after Samuel Brooks, on whose land the house was built. He also provided the funds for the Brooks Institute in Ashton on Mersey, and Brooklands Road is named after him. Until today I didn't realise he had provided the funds for St. Anne's to be built !! I was baptised at St. Anne's Church on 29th June 1958, by Reverand Winston Hurlow. I was interested to read that the church was once surrounded by cornfields - on my Baptismal Card is a photograph of the church, showing those cornfields. I was amused to read an entry in this guestbook referring to "Knocker Road" - I didn't actually go there myself, I went to the Girls' Grammar School on Marsland Road - I wonder if the "Knocker Road" nickname is still used at the school today, or is it a long forgotten memory of the 1970s ??!!!

Re. John Coulson

John Coulson (Renters’ Warden, 1870 to 1873) was born in Lincoln in 1831 and, by the 1870s, he was living in the Sale area. His eldest daughter, Henrietta, was married at St Mark’s, Worsley, in 1875. She married my great-great-granduncle, Joseph Ramsay Railton.

John and his family lived at 15 Montague Road, Sale (in 1871) and at the time of his death in 1872 the family were living at Priory Gate, Sale. He was a Solicitor in King Street Manchester.

His widow, Henrietta, moved to Kings Drive, Heaton Norris where she died in 1901.

It is nice to see that the old school is still going. I went to St Anne's in 1954 to 1959. It would be nice to hear from anyone who went to 'Knocker Rd.' (Sale Moor Secondary) after that.
